Namie Taniguch's Artist Statement
Born in Japan and came to New York in 2001.
My work is conceptual. My concept, along with different materials and environments, is incorporated with an architectural site.
The choice of material is determined by the degree of transparency, such as glass, clear glass, water, jell, gelatin, plastic, resin, clear silicon, or ice. The transparency is significant in my work. I equate transparency with invisibility. Using invisible material, I create invisible works.
My art vision derives from two traditional art movements in post-war era, which are minimalism and conceptualism. These visual vernaculars are omnipresent in various fields, such as interior, graphic, furniture, or product design. Finding a lack of visual element in both movements, I try to add my own visual element into my work. I do not create something amusing to viewers, rather I create to evoke viewers perceptions, senses, conceptions, and prejudgments.
My favoritism towards Architecture has influenced on my work. The gap between art and architecture has been narrowed down. Architecture is art and art is architecture. I approach from both direction and reach a tangibility of the two.
